Käthe Kruse is more than just the famous "doll mother". In this moving biography, Friederike Becht slips into the role of an entrepreneur who is one of the most fascinating female figures of the 20th century. The film illuminates the lesser-known facets of her eventful life with ups and downs: Käthe Kruse was an actress, mother and versatile artist. At a time when there was still no talk of equality, she steps out of the shadow of her famous partner to pursue a career as an entrepreneur. Her groundbreaking trademark protection process, with which she defends her intellectual property against an overpowering toy manufacturer, goes down in history.

As the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress, the young Katharina Simon (Friederike Becht) has no bright future prospects. But undreamt-of talents lie dormant in the determined woman. At the age of 17 she made her debut with great success as an actress at the Berlin Lessing Theater. The world is at her feet when she meets the prominent artist Max Kruse (Fritz Karl) at the premiere party. The two become a couple; But the newly divorced sculptor is not ready to marry again, not even when Kathe is expecting a child from him. Even without a marriage license, they both have happy years, but their illegitimate coexistence does not correspond to the moral standards of fine Berlin society.

When the sculptor can no longer find buyers for his sculptures, he considers a temporary separation. In this difficult situation, Käthe takes flight forward. Together with her mother, she moves to Monte Verità in Ticino, an artists' colony where alternative ways of life are tried out. At Max's suggestion by letter, Käthe makes a doll for her little daughter here - not realizing that this will mark the turning point in her life. The natural facial expression with lively facial expressions inspires children and parents alike. The press celebrates Käthe's lovable doll, a large American toy retailer orders 200 pieces. But Käthe does not allow herself to be carried away by the unexpected success. She oversees the situation and he opens a factory to produce the dolls according to her quality requirements. For Max, whose star keeps falling, it is not easy to be the unsuccessful husband of an aspiring entrepreneur. When the mighty toy manufacturer Bing (Wilfried Hochholdinger) copied Käthe's successful model - and also advertised his machine-made cheap products with the slogan “Imitation of the Käthe Kruse doll” - their manufacture threatened to end. Bing has no idea what it means to mess with Käthe Kruse.
